Padding probably won’t be foremost on your mind when shopping for carpeting. However, it plays a significant role in the performance and longevity of your rug.
What does carpet padding do?
It forms a foundation and protects both sides of the carpet. The top is protected from footsteps and furniture indentations, while the backing is protected from the bare floor.
Padding acts as a shock absorber, increases comfort, absorbs sound, and enhances durability. It also keeps stains from going into the subfloor!
Carpet padding has good temperature insulation. When combined with carpet, the floor covering will hold on to warm or cool air.
Isn’t all padding the same?
No. Most residential carpets require padding between ¼-inch and 7/16-inches, with a six-pound weight.
Thicker isn't always better. Some paddings are too bulky for some rugs.
Berber styles are an example of this. The padding should be no more than 3/8 inch thick, but it can have a higher weight of eight pounds.
What happens if it’s the wrong padding?
Our carpet store experts know the wrong thickness can harm a rug. The improper cushion will cause the carpet to wrinkle and buckle.
Seams will become separated, and the carpet structure will break down. You might also void any warranty protections since many have clauses with strict requirements.
